Idea Cellular says adds 1 mln 3G users since March launch

Telecom service provider Idea Cellular Thursday said it has registered one million third generation (3G) subscribers within the first month of it launching the service in the country.

‘One million Idea users are now enjoying superior quality voice, text and data services including high speed internet browsing up to 21.1 Mbps, video calling, mobile TV, multi player gaming and many more applications on the 3G platform,’ the company said in a statement.

Starting with 3G network in nine cities in March, Idea now covers over 400 towns across the country.

The telecom company had started off its 3G services from three circles – Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh on 28 March, thereafter expanding to six other circles of UP East, UP West, Maharashtra & Goa, Kerala, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh.

It is now looking at progressively expanding its 3G services to cover 750 towns by mid 2011, and 4,000 towns by the end of FY12.

Tata Tele paid Rs.5,864 crore for the airwaves in nine circles spanning Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh-Chattisgarh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh (West).

Tata DoCoMo has named its 3G services as 3G Life and also set up a special website for it – www.3glife.com. The Tata DoCoMo HSPA+ 3G Network that has been set up with the assistance of NTT DoCoMo. This network supports high-speed Internet access with speeds of up to 21.1 Mbps. Also, the support for high-definition voice (HD Voice) for a superior voice experience on calls exists

Tata DOCOMO’s 3G Service can be currently enjoyed  in the following 20 cities: Rajkot, Bharuch, Ambala, Karnal, Panipat, Thanesar, Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Jalandhar, Patiala, Bhopal, Udaipur, Kota, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, Modinagar, Shridi and Bangalore

Tata DOCOMO has already invested $500 million on making 3G services a grand hit. Executive President of the Mobility Business Division of Tata Teleservices Limited, Deepak Gulati informed that at the initial stage, 3G users can watch as many as 50 TV channels on their 3G enabled handsets and the company is optimistic about taking the number to 90 within few days.

There has been reports that Tata Docomo will be launching  3G services in India on eve of Diwali (November 5th 2010). With this Tata Docomo will become the 1st private player to launch 3G commercially.

Tata Docomo has won 3G spectrum in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (West), Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It is expected that 3G will be launched simultaneously in all these 9 circles.

Tata Docomo has already begun to advertise its 3G network features on various TV channels. For 3G fans its the right time to look for 3G compatible handsets.

TATA DOCOMO is a Tata Teleservices Limited’s (TTSL) cellular service provider on the GSM platform-arising out of the Tata Group’s strategic joint venture with Japanese telecom giant NTT Docomo in November 2008.

Telecom service provider Aircel said it would spend over $500 million to roll out its third generation (3G) service in India in the January-March quarter of 2011.

While interacting with the media on the sidelines of the launch function of Aircel-Apollo Mobile Healthcare here today, Aircel COO Gurdeep Singh said that it would cover top ten cities in each circle where it is present.

Initially the company will launch 3G in top 10 cities of each circle and then will cover the rest of the states in which it has received spectrum.

The company had won spectrum for 13 new circles across India. These include Delhi (Metro), Mumbai (Metro), Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra & Goa, Rajasthan, Punjab, UP (West) and UP (East).

Aircel is a joint venture between Maxis Communications of Malaysia and Apollo Hospital Enterprise Ltd of India. UTSB has a 74% stake in Aircel and the remaining 26% is with Apollo Hospitals.
