India’s state-owned telco, BSNL has said that it will suspend rolling out its WiMAX network into rural areas unless the government increases the subsidy for operating the network in loss-making areas. The company is seeking a grant of Rs 2,395 crore (US$537 million) to support what it says is an unviable business.

BSNL has told the Government that either it should be given additional grant of Rs 2,395 crore or it will have to scale down the rural project from 7,863 WiMax base stations to just 1,798 base stations. The company said that it needs more funding due to the high price it had to pay for broadband spectrum.

“Based on revised spectrum cost, a revised business case was forwarded to the Department of Information Technology (DIT) requesting for additional grant of Rs 2,395 crore on WiMax rural project to enable BSNL to at least realise the expenditure on the project at no profit-no loss basis. You will appreciate that BSNL is seeking only Rs 2,395 crore against rural deployment and BSNL has absorbed Rs 6,650 crore as it sown cost by apportioning only 20 per cent spectrum cost,” stated a letter from the PSU to the DIT

BSNL has been struggling to make a business case out of its broadband project after it paid Rs 8,313 crore to the Government for spectrum.

4G Wimax-ready laptops are being rolled out by Toshiba.

The new machines are designed to take advantage of the 4G WiMax networks that are being rolled out

WiMax is like a Wi-Fi connection that covers an entire city, with average download speeds of 2-3Mbps

Wimax will be available on the Satellite A665-S6086, Satellite A665-S6094, Satellite A665-S6097 Satellite A665-S6098 and the 3D-capable Satellite A665-3DV6 models

The emergence of WiMAX (Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access) as a broadband wireless access (BWA) technology adds another alternative for users to access broadband services, specifically high speed Internet (HSI). WiMAX has the capability to deliver triple play services, i.e. voice, video and data over microwave RF (Radio Frequency) spectrum to stationary or moving users making broadband available anywhere. That is what leads WiMAX being touted as a Personal Broadband technology.
